Million cubic meters of gas per day in Ukraine
Ostrivska – this name is likely to come up frequently at MND. It is a new licence that MND secured in a state auction in western Ukraine. Everything suggests that it has enormous potential in terms of gas reserves. The second newly acquired licence is Pivdenozaluzhanska, located, like Ostrivska, in the Lviv region. This licence was acquired through the purchase of a company which, although it held the licence, was unable to commence production due to a lack of capital.
Five years ago, MND companies operated across an area of just under 150 square kilometres in Ukraine. They currently hold licences covering an area of 522 square kilometres – three and a half times as much.
When will the one million cubic metre milestone be reached?
As for current production, MND is currently (as of February 2026) producing 900,000 cubic metres of gas per day in Ukraine. However, this is certainly not the peak. With the ongoing expansion of production and the addition of new wells, production volumes are sure to increase this year. Further wells are gradually coming online, with several more planned.
To speed up the process, construction of a gas pipeline connected to the new sites is beginning even before the wells themselves are completed. It will then be possible to connect the well immediately and start production – without delay. “This will save us up to three weeks. We expect to reach the milestone of one million cubic metres of gas per day in April,” says Lukáš Svozil, head of MND Ukraine (the target was achieved on 14 March – editor’s note).
The annual production plan for this year is set at 330 million cubic metres of gas, a target MND aims to achieve through continuous investment in infrastructure development.
Drilling, seismic surveys and further development
MND also has ambitious drilling plans in Ukraine. Drilling on new licences, such as Ostrivska, is expected to commence in late April or early May. 2D seismic surveys have already been completed, and plans are in place to cover the entire area with 3D seismic surveys, which will provide more detailed data for further production.
In May, MND will commence drilling on the Pivdenogirsk licence, where three new wells are planned. The situation is also very dynamic at Tynivska, where the Tynivska 111 well is currently being completed. Another will follow in the second half of this year.
At the turn of the summer, MND will begin drilling on the Zhukivska licence in the Poltava region.
Long-term presence and broader energy footprint
MND has been operating in Ukraine since 2014 and during this time has established itself as a major player in the oil and gas extraction sector, particularly in the western part of the country. A key milestone was the discovery of the Girská gas field in 2019, which paved the way for rapid portfolio growth. This continued throughout the period 2021–2025.
In addition to production, MND is also involved in generating electricity from renewable sources in Ukraine – specifically at the Oriv wind farm, which generates approximately 90 GWh of electricity annually.
Thanks to the combination of exploration, production and renewable energy activities, Ukraine is becoming a key market for MND, not only in terms of current business but also for long-term strategic development.

Geology is often about experience and intuition in interpreting data. 3D seismic measurements may produce hard data, but they can reveal a lot, and the human factor still plays a significant role. Volodya Radelytskyi knows the underground structures of western Ukraine very well. It was he who strongly recommended that MND buy the Tynivskaya licence. The swampy area at first sight did not have such potential.
Market and storage capacity impacts of the UA gas transit closure
At the end of 2024, the five-year contract between Russia's Gazprom and Ukraine's Naftogaz for gas transit to Europe expired. Ukraine had previously announced that it was not interested in extending the contract, so the gas flow was stopped as of 1 January 2025.
