Minister of Industry officially launched the operation of our cogenerators in Borkovany

In mid-October, we inaugurated the first project of cogeneration units connected directly to a gas well in Borkovany. The equipment, which is the first of its kind in the Czech Republic, was visited by the Minister of Industry and Trade Lukáš Vlček.

He appreciated that the CHP units are manufactured by the Czech company Gen Tec, which also uses Czech gas produced by MND.

"This project shows where the Czech energy sector should be heading, which needs projects of similar importance. The Czech energy sector is not just about building large nuclear units, but modernising the transmission system, investing in renewables, improving legislation. But all of this can only work if we have enough projects like this, which help us balance the whole system and which we need in the energy mix," said Minister of Industry and Trade Lukáš Vlček.

The installation consists of six units with a total capacity of 3,000 kW, which are located in the neighbourhood and directly connected to the Borkovany II Mining Centre.

According to MND, the main source of natural gas at this centre is the Klobouky 3 well, currently the most productive gas well in the Czech Republic, with a depth of over 2,800 metres and a gas production of 70,000 cubic metres per day.

"Using our gas directly from the probes to control imbalances in the Czech power grid is one of the projects in which we see great potential. In recent years we have been looking for opportunities in promising segments of the 21st century energy sector," said Jana Hamršmídová, Director of Energy MND. MND and GENTEC CHP are already working on other similar projects, including deployment abroad in Ukraine.

On the drilling rig, you can hear the clang of metal, the wind and short, curt sentences. This is no place for “playing at being a lady” – work overalls, sturdy boots, a helmet, gloves and safety goggles are standard kit. And yet it is here that Ivana Kečkešová stands, carrying out technical supervision on MND’s Czech drilling sites.

"Batteries are now an opportunity. Whoever builds them fast will seize it."

The MND Group is completing preparations for its first large battery storage facility, BESS Břeclav, with a capacity of 12 MW. When it goes into operation, it will be the largest stand-alone battery project in the Czech Republic and one of the most important milestones in MND's new energy strategy. We spoke with Roman Kroutil, project manager from the New Business Development team, about how the storage facility will work, why now is the ideal time to invest in batteries, and how he got into this field himself.
